We had the honor of being featured in San Diego Magazine’s December issue, showcasing a luxuriously classic Holiday tablescape and menu. The piece was a part of a three part series pairing local caterers with florists. The video (which still gives us goosebumps) shows a ‘Behind the Scenes’ look at the photoshoot, as well as what sparked this fun idea from San Diego Magazine!

Courtney Isaac, our Senior Event Designer wrote a classic Christmas menu with a modern SoCal flair, inspired by colors of the season and all the robust harvest that time of year. Terri Wedell our Beverage Director focused on using very seasonal ingredients that were equally festive as they were distinctive. Check out the full menu & cocktail descriptions at the end of the post!

A magnet for downtown workers and residents from the moment it opened in an urbane location near the Santa Fe Depot, the new Waters Fine Foods at 555 West C Street boasts a décor and mood designed to comfortably complement the neighbourhood.

Clean, simple and endowed with a dash of “industrial chic” derived from features like an open ceiling with exposed ducts (just think Centre Pompidou in Paris), the new Waters Fine Foods celebrates downtown style while promoting relaxation.  On the broad terrace, sheltered from bay breezes by glass panels, cheerful yellow chairs pair with pearl-gray tables to attractively facilitate enjoying the sunshine.  Inside, the soaring space is rich in fine details like the Carrera marble countertops, white woodwork and brick walls that background the sizable deli counter.  Stocked with tempting savory dishes, salads and sweets, the case is augmented with shelves of deluxe vinegars, oils, crackers and other gourmet items.  Behind the deli counter, a vast blackboard displays the entire menu, including daily specials that may include piquant chicken-tortilla soup, vegetarian “Salad Spa” and hearty pulled BBQ pork sandwiches piled on Waters’ own baguettes.

The artfully arranged deli case and floor-to-ceiling windows are the room’s most eye-catching features.  Above a tall communal table favored by sociable downtowners, a mirror mounted on a cleverly assembled wall of boxwood reflects the animated room, and the windows bring sweeping plazas and shady palms inside while silencing downtown noises.

Opened in late March, the new Fine Foods location presents an expanded menu of the top-quality cuisine prized by patrons of Waters’ popular Bay Park and Solana Beach shops, including gourmet sandwiches and salads, daily entrees, sides, and desserts, as well as a larger, made-to-order hot menu featuring burgers, fries and more – all made with the insistence on quality, freshness and artisan-style preparation that are Waters hallmarks. A full-service gourmet shop, the new Waters Fine Foods offers downtown office employees lunch, catering services and an array of take-home or dine-in dinner choices, and features the same amenities for downtown residents.  Open Monday through Friday from 11am to 7pm and Saturday from 11am to 4pm the new shop is convenient to all corners of downtown as well as other urban neighborhoods.

Mary Kay Waters says that the popularity and success of her two original locations prompted the expansion to downtown.

“We have many clients who live downtown and love coming in for meals and baked goods to enjoy at home,” says Waters.  “They’re delighted that they can find the same fine fare in the heart of their own neighborhood, and really appreciate being able to get to and from Waters in just a few minutes.  It’s an entirely new and truly appreciated experience for everyone who lives and works downtown.”

Did your mother ever tell you not to judge a book by its cover?  Well that saying definitely applies to a bottle of wine.  Whether you’re a Master Sommelier or someone who buys wine at the local gas station, you can’t help but appreciate a fabulous looking bottle of wine. Here are just a few of our favorite wine labels, which also happen to have delicious vino inside and are currently featured in our Fine Foods shops.

This refreshing drink has been an absolute staple this summer here at Waters Fine Foods & Catering.  Not only was it our signature cocktail in July and not to mention a huge hit at our Bay Park Fine Foods location, but we have also served it at several of our catering events to much fanfare. Don’t let the honey component and sugar rim fool you, it still offers the perfect amount of tartness from the lemonade and blackberry and will leave your mouth thirsting for more.

Ingredients

Fresh Squeezed Lemon Juice

Honey

Fresh Thyme

Fresh Blackberries

Super Fine Sugar

Honey Thyme Simple Syrup

1/4 cup of Water

1/4 cup of Honey

several Sprigs of Thyme

Heat on stovetop for 5 minutes, remove from heat, strain and chill

Regular Simple Syrup

1/4 cup of Water

1/4 cup of Sugar

Heat on stovetop for 5 minutes, remove from heat and chill

Blackberry Thyme Ice Cubes

freshly press ripe Blackberries through fine sieve – enough for one cup of puree

stir in 1/2 cup of water

pour into ice trays, and place small sprigs of Thyme into each ice cube

freeze overnight

Honey Lemonade

1/4 cup of Honey Thyme Simple Syrup

1/4 cup of regular Simple Syrup

1 Cup of Freshly Squeezed Lemon Juice

2 Cups of Water

Stir together and store for up to 4 days

Cocktail Time!

Fill shaker half way up with ice

pour two ounces of Kettle One or Grey Goose Vodka into shaker

add four ounces of Honey Thyme Lemonade

throw in a few springs of Thyme and shake for 10-15 seconds

Rim highball glass with lime, and gently press into super fine sugar

Strain cocktail into sugar rimmed highball

Top with 2-3 of your Blackberry Thyme Ice Cubes & garnish w/ more Thyme

Enjoy!

Serving size – 6 cocktails

Bigger and better, our new Waters Fine Foods gourmet shop in Bay Park is now open!  Occupying a sunny corner at 1122 Morena Boulevard (619-276-9336), the new location looks out at the world through walls of glass, and boasts plenty of parking within feet of the entrance.  Featuring double the seating of our previous spot, which was  just around the corner,  Waters Fine Foods in Bay Park offers a friendly, quaint but modern setting accented by touches of rustic charm.  Besides polished metal tables for small parties, we now have an inviting wood-topped communal table which as many as eight can share to enjoy lunch, dinner or a revitalizing mid-day snack.  Nearby on custom-built shelving are irresistible packaged products like our own housemade granola, exquisite, small-batch fruit preserves from France and many other gourmet foods.  Our famous fresh food cases have been extended in the new space to display even more delicious selections.

Our expanded menu continues to offer many favorites, including fresh bakery items like our popular cupcakes, pies, lemon bars, quick breads and cookies, as well as fluffy quiches, artisan pizzas, refreshing seasonal salads, and a selection of hand-crafted gourmet entrées.

Our owner Mary Kay Waters’ food philosophy, put in practice when she started Wates in 1990, continues to specify supporting local farmers, fishermen and artisans whenever possible, and encouraging sustainability, organic foods and hand-made techniques. We believe in culinary responsibility and practice it in our kitchens daily.

Open from 11am-7pm Monday through Friday and Saturday from 11am to 4pm, the new Bay Park Waters Fine Foods location is the perfect spot for meals on the go, lunch, dinner, dessert or catering.
